Rubber and Ceramic Lagging

Ceramic Lagging Service

Rubber Lagging is a protective and performance-enhancing layer of rubber applied to conveyor pulleys to improve the friction between the pulley and the belt, reduce slippage, and protect the pulley surface from wear, corrosion, and material build-up. It is widely used in mining, quarrying, cement plants, steel production, and other bulk handling industries. By providing better grip, rubber lagging helps maintain consistent belt speed and reduces the risk of belt misalignment or premature wear.

Rubber lagging is generally available in two main types — Cold Bonded Rubber Lagging and Hot Vulcanized Rubber Lagging.

Cold Bonded Rubber Lagging

Cold Bonded Rubber Lagging involves bonding pre-formed rubber sheets to the pulley surface using high-strength adhesives at ambient temperature. This method offers a quick and cost-effective solution with minimal downtime, making it suitable for low to medium duty applications. While installation is relatively simple, the adhesive bond may be less resistant to extreme conditions compared to hot vulcanizing.

Hot Vulcanized Rubber Lagging

Hot Vulcanized Rubber Lagging is applied by bonding the rubber to the pulley using heat and pressure in a vulcanizing press. This process creates a seamless, highly durable, and water-resistant bond that can withstand heavy loads, high tensions, and abrasive materials. Although it requires more time and specialized equipment, hot vulcanizing delivers superior performance and longevity, making it the preferred choice for heavy-duty applications in harsh operating environments.

Ceramic Lagging Service

Ceramic Lagging is a specialized pulley lagging solution designed to provide superior grip and wear resistance in high-tension, high-slip, and abrasive operating environments. It incorporates ceramic tiles embedded into a rubber matrix, creating a textured surface that significantly enhances friction between the pulley and the conveyor belt. This design reduces belt slippage, improves power transmission efficiency, and minimizes wear on both the belt and pulley. Ceramic lagging is especially beneficial in mining, quarrying, cement, and bulk handling industries where wet, muddy, or abrasive materials often cause traditional rubber lagging to wear prematurely.

Ceramic lagging is available in two main application methods — Cold Bonded Ceramic Lagging and Hot Vulcanized Ceramic Lagging.

Cold Bonded Ceramic Lagging

Cold Bonded Ceramic Lagging involves adhering pre-formed ceramic lagging sheets to the pulley surface using high-performance adhesives at ambient temperature. It offers quick installation and is well-suited for situations where downtime must be minimized. However, its adhesive bond may not match the extreme durability of hot vulcanized methods under the harshest conditions.

Hot Vulcanized Ceramic Lagging

Hot Vulcanized Ceramic Lagging is applied by bonding the ceramic-embedded rubber to the pulley under heat and pressure in a vulcanizing press. This process ensures a seamless, exceptionally strong bond that resists water ingress, extreme abrasion, and heavy mechanical stresses. It is the preferred choice for critical and heavy-duty applications where maximum service life and reliability are essential.

Lagging Installation Process

  1. Pulley inspection and surface cleaning
  2. Sandblasting or wire brushing (if required)
  3. Surface roughening for bonding (buffing)
  4. Adhesive application (cold or hot gum)
  5. Lining of rubber/ceramic sheets
  6. Rolling and stitching to ensure no air bubbles
  7. Vulcanizing or curing (if hot process)
  8. Final trimming and balancing
