Primary Belt Cleaner

Primary belt cleaner is designed able to clean up 90% carry back, and secondary 10% carry back. Blade material is polyurethane safe for the belt, more resistant to wear, able to maintain shape compared to other materials

A Primary Belt Cleaner is a critical component in conveyor belt systems, mounted at the head pulley (discharge point) to scrape off most of the bulk material stuck on the conveyor belt. It ensures that residual carryback doesn’t cause material buildup, belt misalignment, or increased maintenance.

Function & Importance

Purpose Impact
Remove bulk material carryback
Reduces spillage, improves belt tracking and cleaning efficiency
Prevent material buildup on pulleys
Reduces wear, slippage, and potential belt damage
Improve workplace safety
Keeps surrounding area clean and reduces risk of slips and contamination
Lower maintenance cost
Less cleaning required, reduced downtime and labor
Extend belt & pulley lifespan
Prevents damage from material abrasion or buildup

Construction & Material

  • Blade (Scraper) – Made from polyurethane, tungsten carbide, or stainless steel.
  • Mounting Pole – Structural steel or aluminum; holds scraper across the full belt width.
  • Tensioning System – Spring, pneumatic, or mechanical tensioners to maintain constant cleaning pressure.
  • Mounting Location – Positioned directly after the head pulley, contacting the belt surface before it curves downward.

Types of Primary Belt Cleaners (Based on Blade Material)

Type Blade Material Use Case
Polyurethane Blade
Flexible, wear-resistant PU
Ideal for light- to medium-duty applications; safe for belt and splices
Tungsten Carbide Blade
Tungsten carbide tips
Used in heavy-duty, high-speed, or abrasive material applications
Hybrid Blade
PU + tungsten insert
Combines durability with belt safety for balanced performance
Stainless Steel Blade
Full stainless build
For highly corrosive, hygienic, or food-grade applications

A conveyor belt scraper is designed to remove bulk material that remains stuck on the belt after discharge, preventing carryback and maintaining a clean conveying system. These scrapers typically feature blades made from polyurethane (PU), tungsten carbide, or stainless steel, chosen for their durability and wear resistance. They are equipped with various tensioning systems such as spring, pneumatic, torque arm, or mechanical designs to ensure consistent pressure and optimal cleaning performance. Mounted just after the head pulley, the scraper effectively cleans the belt surface before it returns, resulting in a cleaner system, reduced equipment wear, enhanced safety, and improved overall efficiency.

Secondary Belt Cleaner

Secondary cleaners are belt cleaners that are built to scrape materials left on the belt beyond the head pulley. Secondary cleaners are located just past where the belt leave the head pulley, and anywhere else down the beltline. Secondary cleaners are especially good at removing fines and can increase cleaning efficiency to more than 90%. Flexco secondary cleaners handle a variety of applications, with polyurethane, carbide, and brush options available.

Using secondary cleaners on conveyor systems offers several significant advantages. They ensure a cleaner return side of the belt, which minimizes material buildup on idlers and pulleys, reducing unnecessary wear. This leads to longer belt life, as abrasive carryback is prevented from grinding against the belt surface. Maintenance frequency is also lowered, as less cleaning and repair downtime is required. In addition, secondary cleaners contribute to improved safety and hygiene—particularly important in food processing, pharmaceutical, and wet material handling environments. Furthermore, a cleaner belt enhances the effectiveness of skirting systems at transfer points, ensuring better sealing and reducing spillage.

V-Plough Cleaner

A V-Plough Cleaner (also called V-Plow Belt Cleaner) is a belt protection device mounted on the return side of the conveyor, in front of the tail pulley. Its main role is to deflect or remove loose material, debris, or spillage from the inside surface of the return belt before it reaches and damages the tail pulley or other components.

Purpose & Importance of Conveyor Ploughs

  • Removes trapped debris or lumps – Prevents damage to tail pulley, lagging, and bearing housings.
  • Protects tail pulley and idlers – Eliminates risk of belt mis-tracking caused by buildup or wedged material.
  • Increases equipment lifespan – Reduces premature wear on the belt and pulleys.
  • Reduces maintenance downtime – Keeps the return belt clean and prevents unplanned stoppages.
  • Works with other cleaners – Functions before primary and secondary belt cleaners to assist in material removal.
